The Story

Worms with bubblegum parachutes, crickets on bubblegum trampolines, and ants playing tug of war with bubblegum -- this book has practically every bug imaginable doing exciting, creative, fun things with bubblegum except for butterflies because… Butterflies don’t chew bubblegum!

Notes from the Illustrator

I am super proud of our book "Butterflies Don't Chew Bubblegum." I felt really inspired to do the pictures because I was sure that children would love to hear this tale. I knew that children love all different types of bugs, and what could be better than a book about bugs, butterflies and bubble gum?

Then we added another exciting dimension to the book, when I was allowed to draw any pictures I wanted for the "Butterflies Don't Chew Bubblegum!" pages. I found this so exciting! I had control over how the story would come out! I simply tried to come up with as many fun things that butterflies could do with other animals. I thought about what children would love to see (and what do children like better than animals?). Our kids and the rest of the Creative Voyagers team had many ideas too and the end result is the variety you see in the book.

I was incredibly excited that the children get to call out the words "butterflies don't chew bubblegum" on every second page. I have always felt very strongly about children having the chance to be fully involved in the process of reading in a fun way -- I feel that this is how they can learn the most. When I was a child myself, I always loved to shout out things in a story, so I hope that our children will also have the chance to do this as well. I am all about full involvement and fun with reading because books should be a wonderful place that everyone gets to live in for a while.

Notes from the Author

I love to imagine different uses for normal things. With Butterflies Don't Chew Bubblegum, I tried to come up with as many fun things that you could do with bubblegum. Louisa got to come up with all the playful things the butterflies were actually doing.

It was a very fun book to create! That's one of my favorite parts of making books: we're always laughing and trying to come up with something even crazier. This book should definitely bring out your silly side.
